Thailand Poised for Record Korean Tourist Influx as Chuseok Festival Nears

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Thailand is gearing up for a significant increase in South Korean tourists during the upcoming six-day Chuseok holiday next month. This surge is expected to sustain the momentum, with Korean visitors anticipated to hit a new milestone of 2 million this year.

Despite strong competition from Vietnam and Japan, Thai tourism operators remain confident in attracting the Korean market.

Chuwit Sirivejkul, Regional Director of Marketing for East Asia at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), emphasized that South Korean tourists have consistently ranked among the top inbound markets for Thailand throughout the year.

The majority of these visitors are independent travelers, family groups, honeymooners, golfers, and business professionals.

During last year’s Chuseok holiday, 737,687 South Koreans traveled abroad, surpassing the figures from the same period in 2019. Although this festival usually sees a high number of domestic tourists due to various events and promotions, Chuwit noted that many South Koreans still prefer overseas trips during this time.

With flight connections between Thailand and South Korea fully restored, this market is expected to grow further in the final quarter, potentially reaching the 2 million mark this year.

Last year, Thailand welcomed 1.66 million tourists from South Korea, falling just short of the 1.88 million visitors recorded in 2019.
Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, President of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), mentioned that Korean tour groups have already rebounded, though they have shifted towards smaller groups.

ATTA has planned a roadshow in Seoul and Kwangju, South Korea, this October, as both cities are considered high-potential markets for travelers.

As of July, over 5.1 million Koreans had visited Japan, while Vietnam recorded 3.6 million Korean visitors, making it their top tourist market in 2023.
