Medellín’s rapid growth as a tourism hub highlights its transformation into a popular destination for cultural experiences and digital nomads.

Challenges and Opportunities for 2024

Addressing these concerns through sustainable growth and enhanced safety measures will be crucial for maintaining and expanding the country’s tourism sector.

TTW Editor Mr. Anup Kumar says: “Colombia allows visa-free access to 134 countries as of August 2024, greatly enhancing its global mobility. This vibrant and diverse nation, located at the crossroads of South and Central America, is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. Major investments in infrastructure and a strong institutional framework have significantly bolstered Colombia’s tourism sector. The country’s resilience, diverse landscapes, and iconic attractions such as Cartagena’s historic Old Town, Medellín’s innovative urban spaces, and the lush Coffee Triangle have positioned Colombia as a premier global destination. Additionally, the rise of Colombia’s airlines, like Avianca, has improved connectivity, further boosting tourism. Glaciar Perito Moreno:

Glaciar Perito Moreno, the crown jewel of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares in Inland Patagonia, Argentina, is a must-see for any traveler exploring South America in 2024. This awe-inspiring glacier, one of the most accessible and dynamic ice fields on Earth, stretches 30 kilometers long, 5 kilometers wide, and towers 60 meters high. What truly sets Perito Moreno apart is its constant advance—moving up to 2 meters per day—resulting in massive, building-sized icebergs calving spectacularly into the Canal de los Témpanos.

The Thrill of Nature’s Power

Visiting Glaciar Perito Moreno is not just a visual experience but an auditory one as well. The thunderous crack and splash as colossal chunks of ice break off and crash into the water below create an exhilarating atmosphere that keeps visitors on edge. The glacier’s unique location at Península de Magallanes ensures you’re close enough for breathtaking views, yet safely distant to observe this natural wonder in all its glory.

A network of steel catwalks, spanning almost 4,000 meters, offers multiple vantage points for viewing, photographing, and simply marveling at the glacier. As the sun rises and shifts throughout the day, the glacier’s appearance transforms, casting shadows that enhance its dramatic landscape. For those visiting in inclement weather, a glass-walled refugio allows for comfortable viewing without missing the action.

A Spectacle of Natural Forces

Since 1917, Glaciar Perito Moreno has periodically advanced far enough to dam the Brazo Rico section of Lago Argentino, causing water levels to rise significantly. Occasionally, the weight of the water becomes too much for the ice dam, leading to an explosive collapse—a breathtaking natural event that has occurred 18 times and remains one of the most unforgettable spectacles for those lucky enough to witness it.

Planning Your Visit

To fully experience the magnificence of Glaciar Perito Moreno, plan to spend a full day exploring the catwalks and observing the glacier’s dynamic movement. Mornings offer the best light for photography as the sun illuminates the glacier’s face, but the shifting shadows throughout the day provide unique perspectives worth capturing.

While the glacier is accessible year-round, the summer months (November to March) are the most popular due to milder weather and longer daylight hours. Be sure to bring layers, as temperatures can vary significantly, and sturdy shoes for walking the catwalks.

Nearby Attractions

While in the region, consider exploring other natural wonders like Parque Nacional Torres del Paine just across the border in Chile, where granite pillars soar above the Patagonian steppe. Both parks offer unique and complementary experiences, showcasing the rugged beauty and raw power of Patagonia’s landscapes.

Things to do in Mexico:

Why You Should Go

Tulum Ruins, perched dramatically on seaside cliffs overlooking the Caribbean’s turquoise waters, is one of Mexico’s most captivating archaeological sites. Unlike the grandiose structures of other Maya cities, Tulum’s modest ruins offer a unique charm, stirring the imagination with visions of ancient traders arriving by canoe and Maya workers marveling at the same breathtaking views. As one of the most visited sites in Mexico, Tulum is a must-see for anyone exploring the Yucatán Peninsula.

The Historical Significance

Tulum was inhabited as early as 564 AD, but its golden age spanned from 1200 to 1521 AD when it served as a critical port controlling maritime trade along the Caribbean coast, stretching to present-day Belize. When Spanish conquistador Juan de Grijalva sailed past in 1518, he was struck by the sight of this walled city, its buildings painted in vibrant reds, blues, and yellows, with ceremonial fires burning atop its seaside watchtower. However, the city was abandoned only 75 years after the Spanish conquest, its population decimated by European diseases. For centuries, the jungle reclaimed the ruins, which remained largely unknown until rediscovered in the mid-1800s by explorers John Stephens and Frederick Catherwood.

Exploring the Ruins

The name “Tulum” means “wall” in Yucatec Maya, a nod to the city’s impressive fortifications. Originally known as Zamá, or “dawn,” due to its eastward-facing orientation, the site’s walls enclose the city’s civic-ceremonial buildings, palaces, and homes of the ruling elite. Visitors can explore the compact archaeological zone, which can be thoroughly enjoyed in a couple of hours—or longer if you take a swim at the beaches below.

Must-See Structures

  • Templo del Dios de Viento: Perched on a rocky outcrop with the Caribbean as a backdrop, this small circular temple, associated with the god of wind, is the most photographed structure in Tulum. The temple’s roof is said to have had a special opening that whistled when hurricanes approached, warning the city’s inhabitants.
  • Templo del Dios Descendente: Named after the iconic relief of a descending god above its entrance, this temple is believed to be dedicated to the revered god of bees. During the spring equinox, a ray of sunlight perfectly aligns under the image, creating a mystical atmosphere.
  • El Castillo: The tallest structure in Tulum, standing 7.5 meters high, El Castillo served as a lighthouse guiding canoes to the beach below. The shrine at its top doubled as a beacon, while the plumed serpent carvings at the corners reflect the Toltec influence in the region.
  • Templo de las Pinturas: This observatory temple, used to track the sun’s movements, features some of Tulum’s most elaborate decorations, including stucco masks, carved figures, and weathered but beautiful murals depicting various Maya gods.

The Beaches

Tulum is one of the few Maya ruins that boast direct access to the beach, with two stunning stretches of sand lying just below the ancient structures. The main beach, located beneath El Castillo, is accessible via a steep wooden staircase and is often crowded by late morning. A second, more secluded beach lies below the Templo del Dios de Viento, offering an ideal spot for capturing memorable selfies with the ruins in the background.

Practical Information

Tours: Certified guides offer insightful two-hour tours onsite for around M$700, available at the visitors complex and near the ticket booth.

Tickets: Admission costs M$80 and can only be purchased onsite. The ruins are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry at 3:30 p.m.

Tips: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the ruins in relative peace before mass tour groups arrive. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the ruins offer little shade and the heat can be intense year-round.

Getting There

Tulum’s visitor complex is easily accessible from Hwy 307. From the complex, it’s a 1km walk to the ticket booth and the archaeological site, or you can take a trolley for M$55. Taxis from town charge a fixed rate of M$100, while colectivos (shuttle vans) drop off passengers a short walk from the entrance. For those driving, ample parking is available for M$180.

Additional Attractions

While in Tulum, consider exploring nearby sites such as SFER IK, a contemporary art museum, or the Cobá Ruins, where you can climb the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán Peninsula. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve also offers stunning natural beauty just a short distance away.

Tulum Ruins offer a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an unmissable destination for your 2024 travels. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, relaxing on the beach, or capturing the perfect photo, Tulum will leave you with unforgettable memories.

After taking in the botanical wonders, follow the jungle trail down to the tranquil shores of Río Horcones. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the river’s cool, clear waters, surrounded by the natural beauty of boulder-strewn landscapes—a perfect way to end your visit to the gardens.

Plan Your Visit

For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the experience, the gardens offer a six-hour nature and culinary tour. This guided outing includes round-trip transportation, entrance to the gardens, lunch at the Hacienda de Oro restaurant, and a demonstration on making vanilla extract. Be sure to check the garden’s website for upcoming events, including flower shows, birding festivals, and culinary gatherings.

Dining Options

The Hacienda de Oro, the garden’s onsite restaurant, serves a variety of dishes, from breakfast items to fish tacos and brick-oven pizza. The open-air setting provides a delightful place to relax and enjoy a meal with a view of the lush surroundings. Alternatively, on your return to Puerto Vallarta, you can stop for a late lunch at one of the seafood restaurants in the nearby fishing village of Boca de Tomatlán.

This charming village offers a chance to savor ceviche tostadas by the beach or embark on a coastal hike to discover hidden coves like Colomitos. For film buffs, a visit to Mismaloya is a must—it’s the location where John Huston filmed The Night of the Iguana. From here, you can explore the nearby islets of Los Arcos, a fantastic spot for snorkeling and diving.

Practical Information

Admission to the Jardín Botánico de Vallarta is M$200 per person, with free entry for children under four. The gardens are typically closed on Mondays, except during the peak season from December to April when they are open daily. Remember to bring cash, insect repellent, appropriate footwear for hiking, and a swimsuit if you plan to swim in the river.

Getting There

The gardens are easily accessible by car, located about 30 km (19 miles) south of downtown Puerto Vallarta along Hwy 200—a scenic 35-minute drive. If you prefer public transport, buses marked “El Tuito” depart every half hour from the corner of Carranza and Aguacate in the Zona Romántica for a budget-friendly fare.

Yelapa

Nestled in Puerto Vallarta’s southernmost cove, Yelapa is a hidden gem that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life. This picturesque beach, surrounded by jungle-clad mountains, is home to a small fishing community that has maintained its charm despite the growing number of day-trippers. The best way to reach this remote coastal village is by boat, making the journey itself an adventure. As the day draws to a close and the last water taxi departs, Yelapa reveals a much quieter side, offering visitors the chance to enjoy its laid-back vibe without the crowds. An overnight stay allows you to fully appreciate the serene atmosphere and natural beauty of this unique destination.

Sleeping:
Yelapa offers a variety of accommodations, many perched on the lush hills overlooking the cove. From budget-friendly apartments to luxury guesthouses and wellness retreats, there’s something for everyone. Keep in mind that prices rise during the high season from December to April, so it’s wise to book well in advance. Some places feature open-air rooms that allow refreshing ocean breezes to flow through—just don’t forget to pack insect repellent to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Eating and Drinking:
For a small village, Yelapa boasts an impressive number of dining options. Along the beach, you’ll find numerous palapa (thatched-roof) seafood restaurants, while the hillsides are dotted with cafes, taco joints, and family-run eateries serving up traditional Mexican dishes. Don’t miss Taquería los Abuelos for its famous fish tacos on blue corn tortillas, or try Ray’s Place for a Sunday birria (goat stew). After your meal, be sure to seek out one of Yelapa’s “pie ladies,” who offer delicious coconut, banana, and lime pies right on the beach.

Sights and Activities:
Yelapa’s natural beauty is its main draw, with two stunning waterfalls to explore. The Cola de Caballo (Horse Tail) waterfall is easily accessible with just a 15-minute walk from the beach, making it a popular spot, especially during peak season. For a more secluded experience, hike to a remote waterfall outside of town. The trail, which involves several river crossings and some rock scrambling, takes about an hour and a half to reach a peaceful swimming hole surrounded by tropical jungle. Bring a bathing suit, hiking sandals, and plenty of water for the trek.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, horseback riding is available to both waterfalls. Alternatively, you can spend your day relaxing on the beach, strolling through the village, or renting a kayak to explore the coastline. Yelapa also has a few yoga studios, though some may close during the low season.

How to Get There:
Yelapa is accessible only by water taxi or private boat, making it a 45-minute ride from the Playa de los Muertos pier in Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romántica. Things to do in UAE

Why You Should Go

The Burj Khalifa, a symbol of modern Dubai and a marvel of engineering, stands as the tallest building in the world at a staggering 2,715 feet (828 meters). Located in Downtown Dubai, this architectural wonder offers visitors an unparalleled experience, from breathtaking views on its observation decks to dining in the clouds at its world-renowned restaurant. Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Dubai or a seasoned traveler, the Burj Khalifa is a must-see destination that truly embodies the city’s ambition and innovation.

Planning Your Visit

To make the most of your visit to the Burj Khalifa, it’s wise to plan ahead. Tickets for the observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors often sell out quickly, especially during peak times like sunset. Booking online up to 30 days in advance is recommended to avoid long waits and secure your preferred time slot. Keep in mind that prices increase during prime hours, and you should budget at least two hours to fully enjoy the experience.

On hazy days, when Dubai’s high humidity cloaks the city in a dense mist, consider visiting at night for a different, yet equally spectacular, perspective. If the outdoor viewing terrace is closed due to weather, note that no refunds are offered, so check the forecast before your visit.

At the Top Observation Decks

The “At the Top” experience on the 124th floor (1,483 feet) is the most popular way to take in the Burj Khalifa’s stunning views. The observation deck is equipped with high-powered viewfinders and digital telescopes that simulate day, night, and historical views of Dubai. A thrilling double-decker elevator, traveling at 32 feet per second, whisks you up to the deck, where you can marvel at the cityscape from dizzying heights.

For those seeking an even higher vantage point, the “At the Top Sky” experience on the 148th floor (1,820 feet) offers the world’s highest observation platform. This VIP experience includes refreshments, a guided tour, and an interactive screen that allows you to explore Dubai’s landmarks virtually. Afterward, you can continue your journey on the 125th floor, where the “A Falcon’s Eye View” attraction provides a virtual flight over Dubai’s key attractions.

Dining at the World’s Highest Restaurant

At.mosphere, located on the 122nd floor (1,450 feet), is the world’s highest restaurant, offering diners a unique combination of exquisite cuisine and breathtaking views. The restaurant’s sophisticated ambiance is enhanced by rich mahogany, limestone, and luxurious carpets. The menu, though compact, focuses on high-quality meats and seafood, ensuring a memorable dining experience. For a more casual visit, the lounge one floor up serves drinks with equally stunning views. Reservations are essential, and a dress code is enforced, with no children under 10 allowed.

Burj Khalifa: A Marvel of Construction and Design

The construction of the Burj Khalifa was a monumental feat, requiring 13,000 workers and six years of continuous labor. The building’s design was inspired by the Hymenocallis desert lily, and its foundation alone required 16,350 cubic yards (12,500 cubic meters) of reinforced concrete. The Burj Khalifa holds multiple world records, including the highest outdoor observation deck, the highest occupied floor, and the longest elevator. The facade, composed of 28,261 glass panels, takes three to four months to clean completely.

Where to Stay Near the Burj Khalifa

Staying in Downtown Dubai offers the perfect base for exploring the Burj Khalifa and the surrounding attractions. The Armani Hotel occupies 15 of the lower floors of the Burj Khalifa, providing guests with a luxurious stay in one of the world’s most iconic buildings. Downtown Dubai is also home to numerous high-end hotels and a few locally inspired boutique options, though most accommodations in the area come with a hefty price tag.

Nearby Dining Options

For those who prefer dining outside the Burj Khalifa, there are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby. Baker & Spice offers fresh, organic salads and main dishes with a view of the Burj and the lake. Majlis, located in the Dubai Mall’s Souk section, serves refreshments made with camel milk, including the unique camelccino (cappuccino with camel milk).

Getting to the Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is easily accessible via the Dubai Metro, with the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station being the closest stop. From there, it’s a short walk through the Dubai Mall to reach the tower’s entrance.

Final Tips

  • Book Early: Secure your tickets online well in advance, especially for sunset visits.
  • Dress Code: If dining at At.mosphere, adhere to the dress code and note that children under 10 are not allowed.
  • Check the Weather: Avoid disappointment by checking the weather forecast before booking your visit, particularly for daytime views.

Whether you’re gazing out from the world’s highest observation deck or dining in style with the city at your feet, the Burj Khalifa offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the essence of Dubai’s grandeur and ambition.
